Johnny Tomlinson entered the 2025 Key West World Championships with a full workload, competing in Pro Class 1 while also racing the Mead Family Racing MTI in Factory Stock. The Factory Stock opener on Wednesday took a sharp turn when the Mead Family Racing MTI made contact with another boat in the roughest waters on the course while charging toward Turn 2. The impact disturbed the boat’s balance and caused an immediate blowover, ending their race almost as soon as it began. Tomlinson surfaced without injury, while driver Caleb Mead was taken in for treatment with an ankle injury, abruptly closing out their week in the Factory Stock class.
“That was one of the most violent wrecks I’ve experienced in my offshore racing career,” Tomlinson said. “I’m extremely grateful to MTI for building such a strong cockpit and overall boat structure, there’s no question it kept Caleb and me from far more serious injuries.”
With the MTI sidelined, Tomlinson returned his focus to Pro Class 1 duties with Pothole Heroes and pushed through the remainder of championship week. Friday’s race showed progress as the team improved pace and consistency, settling into the top half of the field and gathering valuable setup information. Sunday’s finale offered limited passing opportunities, but the crew executed cleanly and finished the week with a clearer understanding of what the boat needs heading into next season.
Although the Factory Stock incident was a major setback, Tomlinson’s week highlighted his ability to handle adversity and stay composed across two demanding classes while adapting to different boats, setups, and driving styles. Pothole Heroes leaves Key West with clear momentum after steady gains throughout the event. The focus now turns to off-season development and returning even stronger for next year’s championship push.
