The 2024 Key West World Championships proved to be a challenging yet rewarding event for Johnny Tomlinson, who pulled double duty as throttleman in two high-stakes races. With Wednesday’s races canceled due to a hurricane-threatened forecast, the competition kicked off on Friday with an eager energy. In the PRO Class One race, Johnny and driver Carlos De Quesada were able to secure a podium finish, taking 3rd place despite the fierce competition. Unfortunately, mechanical issues in the Sunday race, where double points were up for grabs, knocked them out early, leaving them 10 laps down in 6th place. This result ultimately placed them 5th in the overall World Championship standings—a bittersweet outcome after their promising start.
Meanwhile, Johnny’s performance in the Stock 450 class, alongside driver Taylor Scism, was also a mix of highs and lows. The team struggled with a slow start on Friday, failing to find their rhythm and finishing 6th in the race. However, they bounced back on Sunday, pushing their MTI hull to a strong 4th-place finish, helping them secure 4th overall in the Stock 450 class standings. Despite the setbacks in both races, Johnny and his teams displayed resilience and determination throughout the weekend, maintaining a positive outlook despite not achieving the top spots they had hoped for.
Though the results weren’t what they had hoped for, Johnny and his teams left Key West with a sense of pride and excitement for the future. The event, though challenging, was a testament to their hard work and commitment to excellence. Looking ahead to the 2025 season, Tomlinson is already gearing up for another year of competition, eager to build on the lessons learned from this year’s World Championships and return stronger than ever.
